Being a Mortgage Advisor Is a Life Sentence

(Shared this in our great Continuum call today, so here’s the full ‘Monday Mojo’ I wrote for my team and sending next week…hope it helps someone!)

I say this with some fun, but also with full seriousness: being an entrepreneurial mortgage advisor is a life sentence.

Why? Because once you’re in, it’s hard to imagine doing anything else. What other career gives you unlimited income potential, the freedom to build teams around you, and the freedom to delegate the stuff you don’t want to do (or aren’t good at)? Over 27 years in this business, I’ve heard the same thing from countless originators who may be frustrated, stressed, or even borderline burned out: “I just can’t imagine what else I’d ever do.”

But here’s the real challenge. If this is your life sentence, how are you going to serve it?

  • Are you going to do this work at the highest level of your abilities, or are you going to coast and settle for mediocrity?

  • Are you going to have fun with it, or will you grind away, burning out by staying busy with tasks you don’t enjoy?

  • Are you going to see this as an opportunity, or as a burden?

The truth is, this business is both a challenge and a choice.

For many of us, being an entrepreneurial mortgage advisor is indeed a life sentence — but it’s also a privilege. The opportunity in front of you is your responsibility. Right now, in your same market, maybe even at your same company, there are people doing more, earning more, achieving more, and impacting more lives. Which proves one thing: it comes down to what you choose to do, and how you choose to approach this business.

For me, 27 years in, the opportunities only keep expanding. There’s more room to grow, more lives to impact, and more legacy to build.

So I’ll leave you with this: if this really is a life sentence, how will you approach the next 5, 10, or even 25 years?
