Dario Amodei (CEO of Anthropic) said in a recent podcast that millions of people are now using Claude Code to build with AI. Then Fidji Simo (CEO of Applications at OpenAI) posted yesterday that Codex now has over 2 million weekly active users. Up nearly 4x since the start of the year.
Some are developers, but a lot aren't. These are also founders, solo operators, consultants, marketers, ops folks — all who are building their own tools that automate their work, run their businesses, and ship their products.
And when you hear those numbers, you'd think adoption is exploding. And it is… relatively.
But zoom out.
2,500 dots represent the entire human population, so each one is roughly 3.2 million people.
The grey dots are the ~6.8 billion people who have never used AI.
The green dots are the ~1.3 billion free chatbot users.
The yellow dots are the ~15-35 million people paying $20/month for AI tools.
And the red dot is the teeny, tiny 2-3 million people who are actively building with advanced AI platforms like Claude Code and Codex.
That’s less than one in 2,500 people on the planet.
But for the first time in history, one dot on that chart has more capability, more output, more leverage than any other single dot we have ever seen.
If someone in that red dot is getting 10x or 100x the output of someone who is not, the size of the group stops being the point. Those people are going to be drastically ahead of everyone around them whether there are 10 of them or 10 million.
That does not mean you need to panic. Dario and Fidji are both talking about growth, but it’s still just one dot. You have time. But you should probably understand what that dot represents and decide where you want to be relative to it.
If you decide you want to be closer to it, there is a pretty clear starting point: take action, learn to build with AI agents, and deliberately close the gap.
